The European Award for Architectural Heritage Intervention<\/a><\/strong>, a biennial competition organized by COAC <\/strong>(Association of Architects of Catalonia) \u00a0and AADIPA <\/strong>(Association of Architects for the Protection and Conservation of Architectural Heritage), with the \u00a0patronage of the Ministry of Culture of the Government of Catalonia and the City of Barcelona, <\/strong>is in its fifth edition.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year 294 applications were received<\/strong> – the highest number ever received in the history of the award. Fifteen of these applications reached the final: according to the jury, the winning projects were those that defined  <\/strong>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0“diverse interpretations in their approach to intervention, and sensitivity, completeness and respect.” <\/em>\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The European Award for Architectural Heritage Intervention <\/strong>\u00a0has become a reference point for architectural restoration in Europe <\/strong>at a time when the past is being rediscovered not only as a \u00a0source of inspiration, <\/strong>but also as a connection to the contemporary.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let’s discover together the winners of the four categories. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Category A: Intervention on Constructed Heritage<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In an initial evaluation phase, the jury first sought to give visibility to the largest number of works by selecting 16; they <\/strong> then announced the  five finalists. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Hotel Nomad \/ Buchner Br\u00fcndler Architekten (Basilea, Switzerland);<\/li>
  2. Helsinki Olympic Stadium \/ K2S Architects + NRT Architects (Helsinki, Finland);<\/li>
  3. Royal Museum of Fine Arts (KMSKA) \/ KAAN Architecten (Antwerp, Belgium);<\/li>
  4. Brasserie Gallia \/ Maxime Jansens Architecture + Erwan Bonduelle Architecture (Pantin, France);<\/li>
  5. BIC Monastery of San Pedro de Eslonza \/ Rodr\u00edguez Valbuena Arquitectos (Santa Olaja de Eslonza, Le\u00f3n, Spain).<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Among these, the jury finally awarded the prize to the Royal Museum of Fine Arts (KMSKA) in the city of Antwerp, Belgium, by the studio KAAN Architecten. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The project was chosen for two reasons:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. the complexity and large scale of the project did not prevent the modernization of the building from being carried out in a unitary and respectful way;<\/li>
    2. the incorporation of necessary new volume did not alter the external or internal perception of the museum.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      The  perception and authenticity of the <\/strong>building were not altered, despite the evident contrast between the various areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Category B: External Spaces<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      The jury announced the shortlist of 49 projects<\/strong>, from which the five finalists <\/strong>were selected: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. Deep Matter Garden \/ Studio CE-A + Carlo Ezechieli (Capiago Intimiano, Italy);<\/li>
      2. The Dunbar Battery \/ Rankinfraser Landscape Architecture (Dunbar, Scotland, United Kingdom);<\/li>
      3. Tintagel Castle Footbridge \/ William Matthews Associates + Ney & Partners (Tintagel, United Kingdom);<\/li>
      4. Can Sau. Emergency scenario \/ unparelld’arquitectes (Olot, Girona, Spain);<\/li>
      5. Plaza de la Sinagoga (Synagogue Square) \/ El fabricante de espheras + Grupo Aranea + Cel-Ras Arquitectura (Onda, Castell\u00f3n, Spain);<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        The winner was Plaza de la Sinagoga (Synagogue Square) in Onda, Castell\u00f3n (Spain), by El fabricante de espheras, Grupo Aranea and Cel-Ras Arquitectura. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        An intervention at an 11th-12th centuries archaeological site that has been <\/strong>classified as an asset of cultural interest since 1967. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        This was a winning project because it succeeded in displaying the remains of ancient Arab palaces and the ruins of a Christian church,
        highlighting their historical urban importance, while managing to  transform the site into a meeting space. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Category C: Urban planning<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

          The jury named four finalists in this category; we list them below.  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        1. Urban planning favours heritage \/ Municipality of Vic (Vic, Barcelona, Spain);<\/li>
        2. Study of the urban landscape in the La Nova Esquerra de l’Eixample district \/ Sara Bartumeus + Anna Renau + Rosa Escala (Barcelona, Spain);<\/li>
        3. Special plan for the walled village of Mas de Bondia \/ TerritorisXL (Montorn\u00e8s de Segarra, Lleida, Spain);<\/li>
        4. Preliminary study for the restoration of the Canal de la Infanta and Rec Vell (old irrigation canal) \/ Eva Jim\u00e9nez G\u00f3mez + Xavier Llobet i Ribeiro + Ferran Sagarra iTrias (Barcelona, Spain).<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

          The  winner <\/strong> was the urban landscape study of the district of La Nova Esquerra de l’Eixample in Barcelona,<\/strong> by architects Sara Bartumeus, Anna Renau and Rosa Escala. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

          The award went to this project because the approach to historical space gives importance not so much to physical buildings as to collective memory and the relationships <\/strong>generated around the voids and landscapes that are created there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Category D: Diffusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
          \"Due<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

           The following five finalists were selected in the Diffusion category: <\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

          1. Two houses \/ Verena von Beckerath (Weimar, Germany);<\/li>
          2. DOCOMOMO Iberian Records: documentation and dissemination of the Modern Movement \/ Iberian DOCOMOMO Foundation (Barcelona, Spain);<\/li>
          3. Good practices for volunteering in the field of European cultural heritage. European Heritage Volunteers;<\/li>
          4. Industrial heritage of Tbilisi \/ MUA (Georgia);<\/li>
          5. Re-Edificatoria \/ Adri\u00e0 Goula (Barcelona, Spain).<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

            The prize was awarded to Two houses \/ Verena von Beckerath, Weimar, Germany. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            The jury decided to reward the idea of showing a piece of history about <\/strong> how a group of Japanese architects who studied at the Bauhaus in the 1920s went on to  share in their own country the architectural knowledge that they had acquired, <\/strong>and about how, in the 21st century, their students receive and treasure a heritage that goes beyond architecture itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Special mention: Restoration<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

            The Restoration Special Mention<\/strong> is an award assigned to those projects which, from a technical and methodological standpoint, have distinguished themselves the most for quality, precision and respect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            After an examination of all the projects, it was decided to award the  prize to two projects that each offer a restored space that is accessible and respects the identity of the <\/strong>work: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            1. The restoration of Casa Batll\u00f3, by Xavier Villanueva, Ignasi Villanueva, Mireia Bosch and Ana Atance;<\/li>
            2. the installation of a new staircase at the Tower of the Church of Santa Mar\u00eda Magdalena in Matapozuelos, Valladolid (Spain), by Pedro Rodr\u00edguez Cantalapiedra.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
              \"Torre<\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

              The first is a high quality work of restoration: it revived an initial project <\/strong> which had partially disappeared, restoring it with full respect to the work itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              The second reveals the interior of the tower: it guarantees enjoyment of   an incomparable panoramic view of the surroundings, while <\/strong> managing to involve the public in this restoration of the highest technical quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

              All projects, from the Award’s first edition of 2013 to that of today, <\/strong>are documented in the \u00a0Award’s Digital Archive.
