During the last decades, many architects, engineers and developers have concentrated their work <strong>on reducing the environmental impact of buildings and making them more energy efficient.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is because people feel it is increasingly urgent to tackle crucial environmental and social issues such <strong>as climate change<\/strong> and <strong>environmental justice.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To respond to these issues, <strong>many politicians and large companies have committed to key targets and objectives to be reached before 2030.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The UN is now referring to the next ten years as the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/unric.org\/it\/decennio-dazione-per-raggiungere-gli-obiettivi-globali-dieci-anni-per-trasformare-il-nostro-mondo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>&#8220;Decade of Action&#8221; <\/strong><\/a>as it will be essential to reach these targets and transform the world in this period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A fascinating 30 min documentary called <strong>&#8220;The Decade of Action&#8221;<\/strong> highlights precisely how crucial the next few years are going to be.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several reports show that a large proportion of global emissions <strong>(almost 40%) <\/strong>is represented by<strong> building emissions.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let&#8217;s take a look at how<strong> regenerative building design can help with this issue.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The difference between green, sustainable and regenerative buildings<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To better understand this issue, it&#8217;s helpful to highlight the differences between <strong>green, sustainable and regenerative buildings<\/strong>, as this will offer<strong> a clearer view of the environmentally responsible construction sector.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A green building <\/strong>needs to meet technical requirements that<strong> reduce its environmental impact <\/strong>compared to conventional buildings, which still use obsolete environmental standards from the 1950s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A sustainable building <\/strong>should not have a significant environmental impact, or at least it should mitigate its emissions so that it&#8217;s easy for the environment to re-absorb them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If all the buildings in the world were sustainable,<strong> the current environmental situation wouldn&#8217;t get any worse, but,<\/strong> on the other hand, it wouldn&#8217;t solve the problem either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How can we address the massive problem we are all facing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The buildings of the future should be based on regenerative design ideas<\/strong>, meaning that they should also be able to address the issues caused by the construction sector over the last decades<strong> to help the ecosystem regenerate itself<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>GBC Italia, the Italian Green Building Council,<\/strong> wrote <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbcitalia.org\/documents\/20182\/1400845\/GBC+Italia_Advocacy+Manifesto_Website.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a manifesto<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbcitalia.org\/documents\/20182\/1400845\/GBC+Italia_Advocacy+Manifesto_Website.pdf\"> <\/a>to explain this. The manifesto highlighted the important role of the construction industry, listed the main objectives of creating global change and the actions needed <strong>to improve the sector and make it capable of designing and building fully sustainable buildings.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Buildings and global emissions<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every year the UN discloses the progress the world has made towards the <a href=\"https:\/\/unric.org\/en\/united-nations-sustainable-development-goals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>17 SDG &#8220;Sustainable Development Goals&#8221;<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another interesting read is <a href=\"https:\/\/unstats.un.org\/sdgs\/report\/2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>The Sustainable Development Goals Report 2020<\/strong><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have already mentioned how buildings produce almost 40% of the annual global emissions, which was also reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/architecture2030.org\/buildings_problem_why\/?utm_medium=website&amp;utm_source=archdaily.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Architecture 2030<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sunbell.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Grafico-emissione-edifici.jpeg\"><img \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To meet <strong>climate objectives set out during the Paris Agreement, it will be necessary to eliminate all the gas responsible for the greenhouse effect <\/strong>by 2040.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, when looking at the infographic below, designed by <strong>the UNEP<\/strong> and by the <strong>Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction<\/strong>, we can see how the <strong>construction industry <\/strong>is acting very slowly and risks missing the targets set for 2040.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sunbell.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Emissioni-edifici_jpg.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sunbell.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Emissioni-edifici_jpg.jpeg\" alt=\"Emissioni edifici\" class=\"wp-image-17775\" width=\"614\" height=\"1920\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sunbell.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Emissioni-edifici_jpg.jpeg 614w, https:\/\/www.sunbell.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Emissioni-edifici_jpg-480x1501.jpeg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 614px, 100vw\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At 10Gt of C02,<strong> the construction industry&#8217;s emissions are currently the highest in history<\/strong>, and buildings alone represent 35% of global energy consumption.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s why architects, developers, engineers and environmentalists keep researching <strong>new ways of improving building sustainability, <\/strong>like the development of buildings based on regenerative architectural design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Regenerative design: the future of architecture<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regenerative design ideas intend to be increasingly more sustainable and want to <strong>repair the already damaged natural and human ecosystems.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/living-future.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>International Living Future Institute<\/strong><\/a> is one of the organizational <strong>leaders promoting regenerative design ideas<\/strong> and pushing for the Living Building Challenge, the highest possible green building standard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The living building challenge consists of seven categories with different standards that need to be met:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Place<\/li><li>Water&nbsp;<\/li><li>Energy<\/li><li>Health and Happiness&nbsp;<\/li><li>Materials<\/li><li>Equity<\/li><li>Beauty<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An example of a building embracing regenerative design idea is the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gatech.edu\/2021\/04\/22\/kendeda-building-georgia-tech-earns-living-building-certification\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Georgia Tech Kendeda Building<\/strong><\/a>, which obtained the <strong>Living Building Challenge certification.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This building gives back to the environment much more than it takes, <\/strong>as well as focusing on the wellbeing of its occupants, for a total construction cost of $18.6million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Kendeda Building earns Living Building Challenge certification\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/esm3rhgllEA?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regenerative design wants to reconnect humans with their environment by renovating<strong> ecological and social systems.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Compared to a traditional system,<strong> a regenerative approach encourages feedback at every stage of each process<\/strong> to offer flexible and dynamic data.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Management approaches are process focused <\/strong>and can be adjusted depending on different decisions like <strong>energy or materials.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As well as the impact on nature, these processes also need to provide benefits <strong>at a social level, to increase the community&#8217;s wellbeing.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>People and the planet are the main focus of the regenerative design approach.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A complete endorsement of regenerative design <\/strong>hasn&#8217;t been achieved yet. However, an exciting example for it could be the concept behind the <strong>Bosco Verticale\u00a9 in Milan, which uses hundreds of varieties of trees and plants.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This is essentially a project related to urban forestation,<\/strong> which helps regenerate the environment and improves urban biodiversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;Different types of plants produce humidity, absorb CO2 and pollution, produce oxygen and protect from noise pollution, significantly improving living comforts while also saving energy&#8221; <strong>&#8211; <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.infobuildenergia.it\/progetti\/bosco-verticale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Infobuildenergia.it<\/strong><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Regenerative design: 6 opportunities for designers<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Colin Rohlfing,<\/strong> director of sustainable development at the <strong>HDR, Human Development Report, <\/strong>suggests that regenerative design could offer designers six great opportunities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Generate new solutions that will benefit the ecosystem, people&#8217;s health and society as a whole<\/li><li>Adopt these concepts for all types of projects, including existing buildings of all kinds of dimensions<\/li><li>Take decisions based on solid and incontrovertible data&nbsp;<\/li><li>Develop projects that will evolve and renew themselves constantly&nbsp;<\/li><li>Incorporate and use current paradigms and knowledge such as carbon emission, the origin of materials and social equity<\/li><li>Constantly involve the community&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regenerative buildings are like a <strong>closed system.<\/strong> They can gather and use resources independently and then use them (and re-use them) as they need, i<strong>n a self-sufficient way, including the elimination of waste.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To conclude, to make buildings not just &#8216;green&#8217;
